HISTOIRE DE PAILLE

At first was the chair

- two kinds of chair: bare wood for commoners and upholstered for the powerful. Then the peasants learned how to roll long strands of marshland reeds to make their seats more comfortable. They later made these green reeds more attractive by covering them with golden or coloured rye.
- Later still, a technique called caning arrived from the islands off the coast of India which were occupied by the English and the Dutch, giving rise to chair seats in a star pattern woven with six very long strands of rattan bark. This know-how crossed the English Channel during the Regency period, enabling skilled carpenters to make extremely elegant and amazingly light seats.
- Annie Roussange continues to implement these age-old techniques with passion in her HISTOIRE DE PAILLE workshop in Avignon. She also carries out restoration projects as well as working on old-fashioned patinas, paintwork and pressed caning on more recent chairs.
- Visitors are welcome by appointment, easy parking.
